I wish to upgrade and will only Purchase an NVMe drive at greater expense if it will fit and provide me with the expected speed improvements.

You should be able to add M.2 NVMe SSD to your machine, then move Windows and apps to new SSD. You should get better performance. For how much ? Please watch the following example
