HP 15s-eq1000 Laptop PC (183N3AV)

My laptop model is 15s-eq1079na.

I tried to upgrade the RAM for my laptop (I bought https://www.memorycow.co.uk/8gb-ddr4-pc4-19200-2400mt-s-260-pin-sodimm-non-ecc-memory-ram) but the laptop would not turn on after I fitted the new module. I switched back to the original (4GB) module and it works now (very slow, as before).

I guess the RAM I bought is not compatible. Could someone please help me find RAM that is compatible?

Also, what is the maximum possible RAM? There is only one slot on the motherboard, can I put 16GB in this or am I limited to 8GB?

Thanks

James

Hi, James:

According to the specs, that memory should have worked, so perhaps it was either defective or simply not compatible.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to see if the Crucial brand memory that they indicate is compatible with your notebook's model series works:

Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT8G4SFS824A | Crucial UK

The notebook may support 16 GB of memory:

You can run this command to see if that would be possible:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. After the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

If the report indicates 33,xxx,xxx then you should be able to install 1 x 16 GB of memory.

The report is would be picking up the circuitry for the second memory slot that isn't there.

If it is 16,xxx,xxx then the max would be 8 GB.

This should be the compatible 16 GB memory chip:

Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT16G4SFD824A | Crucial UK

Thanks for your help @Paul, I’ll get back in touch with the vendor to return and get the 16GB module (which, having run the command you suggested, should be ok)

You're very welcome.

Please post back after you install the 16 GB memory chip and let us know the results.

I ended up installing another 8GB module, as the vendor suggested the system may only support 2133MT/s and that 16GB would probably not be supported either (in spite of the command we ran previously).

This is working, although the system reports available memory at 5.32GB. Does anyone know why?
