840 G1
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hi Folks - I currently own a 9470m with a HDD. I'm looking to buy a 840 G1 which comes with a SSD. I believe there is a slot available so I should be able to physically install it.The existing HDD has Windows installed, so I will need to make it secondary via BIOS I believe.

I just want to know if there are any reasons why this isn't doable.

The HP EliteBook 840 G1 only has one 2.5" (HDD or SSD)

            https://support.hp.com/ee-en/document/c03961746

which shows following options

Hard drives
  • 320/500GB/1TB 5400 rpm SATA II Hard Drive
  • 320/500GB 7200 rpm SATA II Hard Drive
  • 500GB 7200 rpm SED (Self Encrypting Drive)
  • 500GB 5400 rpm FIPS SED (Self Encrypting Drive)
Solid State Drives
  • 120GB M.2 (NGFF) Solid State Drive
  • 128/180/240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
  • 256GB SED Solid State Drive

You can only replace existing SSD with a larger (capacity) 2.5" SSD, you can't add anything. No need to change BIOS when using larger SSD.

Regards.

Thank you Banhien.

I suppose however that I may be able to add a 120GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD in the separate expansion slot?

I did say it only have one slot/bay for storage in 2.5" format. No M.2 slot.  Please read its specs again.
