Can I install a Samsung 990 PRO M.2 2000 GB PCI Express 4.0 SSD in my ProBook 450 G5?

You would think I could look this up, but can't find an appropriate manual on the HP site.

Hi:

You can but that would be a waste of money unless you plan on transferring the drive to a newer model PC that has a PCIe Gen 4 SSD slot.

The NVMe slot in the 450 G5 is only PCIe Gen 3.0.

The Samsung 980 (not 980 Pro) would perform just as well in your notebook as the 990 Pro.

Below is the link to the service manual.

Not too many notebooks back then listed the PCIe generation of the NVMe slot in the manual because they were all Gen 3.0, so that is assumed.

The Probook 450 G9 was the first model in the series that has a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe slot.

Thanks.  Exactly the information that I needed!

You're very welcome.

If you need a 2 TB drive, I don't believe Samsung makes a 980 in the 2 TB storage capacity, so you may as well use the 990 Pro or you can use the WD Blue SN570 PCIe 3.0 2 TB NVMe SSD, which is reasonably priced.
