Hi I recently took part my HP Envy 15 to replace the gpu (NVIDIA GTX 740m) only to find that it looks as if it has been soldered into the motherboard. It is hard to tell if it is or not so I am requesting help from the experts. The model number is 15-j118tx.
He or the information given helps!

Hello @FiresideMoon47,

Unfortunately, almost all discrete graphics cards are soldered on the MOBO in laptops and tehrefore upgrades are physically impossible. This is also the same for your laptop.

If you truly wish to, you could opt for a new MOBO but this is very expensive and ultimately a risky upgrade.

Hope this helps,

Eddy

Would there be some kind of way to add one externally somehow or even add an extension that can hide inside?
Thanks!

Hello @FiresideMoon47,

Good question.

Unfortunately, I'm not too knowlodgeable on this topic but I do know that this requires an internal PCIe slot which your laptop doesn't seem to have.

Th easiest option that I am familiar with is to get a laptop with a future-proofed Thunderbolt 3 port - a port that is literally capable of anything.

However, eGPU setups from 3rd party manufacturers honestly don't seem to be the most stable or functional and I personally don't really want to try them out.

All the best,

Eddy
