HP Pavilion DV6 6150ew

Hi All,

I'm not familiar with the topic, so it's better to ask before 😉

I have a laptop HP Pavilion DV6 6150ew with i5 2410M 2nd gen processor. Question is how can I upgade it? I already have SSD instead of HDD, more RAM, but I'm thinking if it's possible to upgrade also processor. I have possibility for i7 2670QM.

Would it be possible to use i7 3rd generation? If i'm not mistaken both have same socket type.

What would be the best, most powerfull processor I can have there?

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

c02842252.pdf (hp.com)

There are two chapters you need to look at.

Chapter 1, page 2 has the list of supported Intel processors.

Chapter 3 has the list of supported motherboards.

If you look at the list of motherboards in chapter 3, different system boards are used in the models that come with the Intel dual core processors and the Intel quad core processors.

I interpret that to mean that only an Intel dual core processor would be supported since your notebook came with a dual core processor, the best one being the Intel Core i7-2620M.

No Intel 3rd gen core processors of any kind are supported in your PC.

@Keisimisko,

I would like to add to @Paul_Tikkanen's response, if you don't mind.

One of my computers is an HP ProBook 6560b laptop -actually very similar to yours, and I also upgraded it a while back with an i7-2860QM.

If your HP Pavilion DV6 6150ew is fitted with an HP 1657 motherboard -you can find out what it is by typing in: cmd in your Windows search bar, right-click on the "cmd" (Command Prompt App), left-click on "Run as administrator", and "Yes" to confirm.

Then copy (exactly as shown below) / paste / & enter:

wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer

And you should see something like this (using my HP ProBook 6560b):

Reason why I want to bring this up, is that if you are really interested to fit your laptop with the very best processor money can buy, according to the manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02842252.pdf:

That would be the Core i7-2820QM (TDP = 45 watt). You could purchase it via eBay for as little as $47: i7-2820QM for sale | eBay.

Also backed up here: https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2410M_(PGA).html, and last but certainly not least by an actual HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC User as seen here: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/46343771.

And if your motherboard happens to be an HP 17FA, you can upgrade to an i7-2860QM as confirmed here: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC Performance Results - UserBenchmark. If interested, this processor is a lot more expensive (>$100) as sold here: i7-2860QM for sale | eBay.

Kind Regards,

Thank you guys for support!

Right now I'm in travel, earliest in the weekend I will be able to have a look on it. I will check as you said. Something is telling me that it might be 17FA (I think I saw it before.. in bios maybe?).

So you are telling me that for sure 3rd gen will not run even if socket is the same, simply motherboard software will not allow it.

Manual will not menton 3rd gen of course because there were not in present at this time (if I'm not mistaken) 😉

I though that maybe there is a way to update software or it can be somehow compatible..

What would happen if I would try anyway? I can fry motherboard or processor? Or it will just not run and I can switch it back?

I have i7 2670QM processor in another laptop so I can try to use it. If it will work and I cannot go out of 2gen, then I will probably stay with it.

@Keisimisko,

As @Paul_Tikkanen already mentioned, your laptop (and my legacy laptop as well) are not compatible with Intel's 3rd gen processors.  If you were to try it, your laptop will not boot -trust us: don't bother.

Thsnks guys.

Don't get me wrong, I was just curious what would happen 😉

As I said I have already i7 2nd gen and not planning to buy 3rd 😉

When I will be back at home on the weekend, I will check what type of motherboard I have and if it's possible to switch CPUs or not.

I checked in bios, it's motherboard number 3388. I must seen 17FA in a different laptop, probably the one from which I have i7. But I found somewhere that there were machines with 3388 board an i7 CPUs. So I will have a try in next days and let you know. Thanks for support guys!
