I know most gpus are soldered to the motherboards but I read somewhere that MX series gpus can be upgraded. Is there any truth to this?

Hi:

 

The Geforce 940MX graphics adapter your notebook has is an integral part of the motherboard.

 

The only way to upgrade the graphics would be to replace the motherboard with one listed in chapter 3 & 6 of your notebook's service manual.

 

HP Pavilion Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide

 

If you look at chapter 6, you will find no procedure to remove or replace the graphics adapter by itself.
