Hi, @PeSal

A rule of thumb is if the processor model ends in a 'U' that means it is an integral part of the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook:

No removable processors were offered in the model series.

If you look at chapter 3 of the service manual, each motherboard part number has its own processor.

@PeSal,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your HP ENVY TouchSmart 4-1102sg uses the Intel HM77 chipset and is likely fitted with an i5-3317U. Whilst the chipset supports upgrades such as the i7-3687U or i7-3537U, these CPUs are only installable if your unit has a socketed CPU -which most ENVY Ultrabooks do not (they're soldered).

If yours is socketed, then one of those i7 ULV CPUs would be the highest possible upgrade. However, in most cases, CPU upgrades aren’t feasible without replacing the entire motherboard.

Kind Regards,

Many thanks for your fast replies.

I've checked the processor of my ENVY. It is an Intel i5-3317U. So it is soldered.

Since I am not an expert in soldering, I think I give up and  keep the system as it is.

I upgraded the CPU of my older HP Pavilion DV7-1190eg to a Core Duo T9900 @ 3.06 GHZ which gave it a 50% performance boost for small money. So I thought I'll check if it is possible to upgrade the newer ENVY as well.

You're very welcome.

As new processor technology has developed over the years and the desire to make thinner and lighter notebooks, manufacturers started figuring out ways to make things differently.

Starting with the Intel 3rd gen core processors, they began integrating some of the processors into the motherboard, thus reducing the thickness of the processor sockets and whatnot, allowing for notebooks to be made thinner and lighter--hence the name 'Sleekbook.'

Some of the 3rd gens were still socketed and could be removed and upgraded.

The 4th gens also had this situation...some were removable/upgradable, some were not--those being the processors ending in 'U.'

Beginning with the Intel 5th gen notebook processors to the present day, every one of them is an integral part of the motherboard.

Replacing the motherboard with the one that comes with the Intel® Core™ i5-3337U would not be worth the expense or effort involved, but that would be the only way to upgrade the processor.
