Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Envy 17 laptop (model is 17-ce0003nf) with 16GB RAM. I want to upgrade to 32.

1. Is that possible? I hear from some sources that yes it is possible and from others that no.

2. Do I need to buy just another 16 GB and add it to the slot? Or do I have to buy TWO 16 GB RAM sticks from the same manufacturer to avoid compatibility issue?
3. Should it even be two 16GB sticks or one 32 GB stick?
4. Any recommended RAM stick? I hear DDR4 only.

Thanks

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP ENVY 17m Laptop PC

Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.

According to the manual, 2 x 8 GB of DDR4-2400 memory is supported.

The Crucial memory report for your notebook indicates that 2 x 16 GB of memory is supported.

HP - Compaq ENVY 17-ce0003nf | Mise à niveau de mémoire RAM & SSD | Crucial FR

The product specs indicate that your notebook comes with 2 x 8 GB of DDR4-2400 memory.

You can do this to confirm how much memory your notebook can support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

If the report indicates you can install 32 GB of memory, I recommend that you buy this kit that Crucial indicates is compatible.

Thanks, Paul. I had already checked Crucial but wasn't sure how reliable their info is.

Just one thing: You say I can buy a 16GB stick and add it to the one I have. However, since my laptop came with two 8 GB sticks, replacing one with a 16 GB RAM stick means that I will have 24GB (which I never heard people do) rather than the 32 GB RAM I want.

I assume that the solution you'd recommend, which is the one Crucial says is possible, is to remove the two 8 GB sticks and replace each with a 16 GB stick. Is that it?

Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

You're very welcome, Ahmed.

I have to edit out that part of my reply.

I posted that because you indicated your notebook had 1 x 16 GB of memory and if it did, then you would just need to install one 16 GB chip.

But after I checked the service manual and it indicated the max memory was 2 x 8 GB, I looked up the specs for your notebook and saw that it did come with 16 GB of memory, but in a 2 x 8 GB configuration, not 1 x 16 GB.

So, if you want to install 32 GB of memory, you will need to remove both 8 GB memory chips and install 2 x 16 GB memory chips.

Cheers,

Paul
