My notebook’s hard drive crashed recently and I was wondering if I could use a 500gb 5400rpm Sata drive instead of a 1tb one.

Hi:
If you have one laying around, that would be fine.
If you have to buy one, I recommend you upgrade to a 2.5" 500 GB solid state drive (SSD) which will provide much better performance than a 5,400 RPM drive.
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.
