I am having a  problem, and I have an SD card where all my documents, music etc are stored. My problem is that after I have deleted all I can through Disc space clean up, I have a little over 1 Gb of space on my C drive. Windows 10 updates require more than this, so everythime the system runs a windows update,  I keep getting an error message that they require more space in order to run updates.

It's to the point that I can't use my computer, and have to resort back to my little HP note book from which I am now posting.

If I purchased an External Hard drive, would Windows be able to run updates on that External hard drive?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Joan

@AJ72

Another option in Disk Cleanup that clears more space. Click "Clean up system files" and on the next page click tab "More options". Choose System Restore and Shadow copies.

Some have had success by using the free Download tool from MS.

  1. Select Download tool now, and select Run.
  2. On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  3. On the "What do you want to do?" page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
  4.  Select "Keep personal files and apps".
  5. If you still get a mesage about not enough space it should give you the option to use another drive. Either plug in a USB Flash drive or external hard drive and select it.

Hello @AJ72

I read your previous posts and it appears you've been struggling with the low storage issue for at least half the year.

You have an HP Stream - 14-ax010ca

You should still have approximately 12 GB of free space on the drive, even after Windows 10's most resent upgrade.

That is, as long as you havent added a bunch of programs or personal files, etc.

You still have either personal data files (doc, photos, etc), lots of installed programs or possibly another User Account created on the drive. Multiple user accounts can fill up a drive also.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5464-delete-user-account-windows-10-a.html

When you added the SD card, did you MOVE your Windows data folders to it, or did you simply copy files over?

If you only copied files, you could have duplicates still on the C drive.

When you run Disk Cleanup, did you run it as an Administrator and check all the boxes?

This would eleminate the restore files for the Windows 10 recent upgrades which can take up at least 5 GB of space.

This would also remove any System Restore Points.

Only you can search for these files taking up space.

If you still cannot find the culprit, the only other advice I can offer is to do a Clean Install of Windows 10. This will wipe the drive and reinstall Widnows. You would have to reinstall drivers and set up your personal programs and such again.

If you chose to do a reinstall, let me know if you need help.

Thank you, Cherly G. I have used the Disc clean up, in fact I use that almost every time I use the computer. I will try the Download tool from MS and will let you know if that solves the problem.
