Page 7, 35, 40 give you specs. Page 65 will give you instructions to insert M.2 2280 SATA-3 SSD in the M.2 SATA slot on board.
M.2 SATA slot has two notches for both M & B keys of the SSD to fit in correctly. So you'll not get mistaken.
Get help from good technician if you're not confident of doing the upgrade yourself.
Both the M.2 SATA 2280 SSD (Amazon links) will work on this machine.
Take out hard drive from its bay while you factory reset OS to SSD, then change boot order to boot from M.2 SSD. Then insert HDD back. Now you can use M.2 SSD to boot from and HDD as storage media.
I don't recommend using optical drive bay to put in SSD as it is inherently slow and you cannot make it bootable.

Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05087748
Specs: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05272322
M.2 2280 SATA-3 SSD slot (M + B keys) present on board. Page 65.
No M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (M key alone) compatible slot available.
You can also remove 1TB HDD and replace with at least 256gb 2.5 inch SATA 7mm SSD. Use recovery media to factory reset OS to it.
