Hi:

You raise an interesting question...according to the service manual, the max memory is 8 GB (chapter 1, page 1).

It also indicates that there are two memory slots, but it only shows memory configuration for one slot.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04777516

So, the only suggestions I can offer are:

1. Run the free Crucial memory scan tool and see what it reports.

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner

2. Install the 4 GB memory chip you removed from the notebook and see if it works in the second slot and reports 12 GB.

If it does, then you should also be able to install an 8 GB memory module.

Thanks For your suggestion about trying it anyway. I did. I had 4gb of memory before and now I have 20gb. I put the new 8gb in the number1 slot and put the old 4gb in the 2nd slot. Now I have 20gb. It works!!! THANKS!!

You're very welcome.

I believe you meant to write 12 GB.

So, you should be able to get another 8 GB module, remove the 4 GB and have the max of 16 GB.

You will want to do that because the 8 GB + the 4 GB only runs in SDR (single data rate) mode, and 2 x 8 GB would run in DDR mode (dual data rate).
