An upgrade of 16 GB of identical guaranteed compatible memory modules will operate as expected.

If you try adding a single module of 8 GB memory that is not identical in all respects to the one that is currently installed, you may very well discover  a downside.

Only one module might be recognized as present by the BIOS and operating system.

That is why upgrading in a pair is the best plan.

According to the official specifications for the HP ProBook 4540s, the maximum supported memory is 16 GB. Therefore, it should be possible to upgrade your laptop's RAM to 16 GB without any issues.

However, it is important to make sure that the new RAM you are purchasing is compatible with your laptop's specifications. In particular, you should make sure that the new RAM is DDR3 type and has a speed of 12800s (1600 MHz), which matches the existing RAM in your laptop. if you get more information go to  techmacc.com

You may also want to consider the number of memory slots in your laptop, as this will determine whether you need to replace the existing RAM modules or add new ones. The HP ProBook 4540s has two memory slots, which means you can either replace the existing 4 GB module with a 16 GB module, or add a second 8 GB module to the second slot.

In summary, it should be possible to upgrade your laptop's RAM to 16 GB, but you should make sure the new RAM is compatible with your laptop's specifications and consider the number of memory slots in your laptop. junkietech
