HP Pavilion Laptop PC 13-bb0000 (9WG28AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I am getting a message from HP Support Assistant that my battery needs to be calibrated. When I try to calibrate the battery using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics as an administrator, the results are "Charge State Not Available" and "Calibrate Battery undefined."

Based on the advice on these boards, I have let the battery drain and recharged the laptop before trying to calibrate. Same results.

Also based on the advice on these boards, I have uninstalled and reinstalled HP Support Assistant. Same results.

My laptop is plugged in 95% of the time, so making the HP Support Assistant message go away is more important to me than calibrating the battery. (If the alert on that message remains on the app icon, I'll miss new, possibly more important messages.) Advice on how to address either is appreciated.

Thank you for posting this. This solution seems a bit extreme for a one-year-old laptop whose battery is working fine. The message I got from HP Support Assistant is that my battery is working fine, but calibration would be a good idea. I've had experience that getting into laptop innards has left the laptop in worse shape than it was before. So I'll bookmark your solution in case I have real battery problems down the road.

In the meanwhile, it shouldn't be hard to address and get rid of this message on a laptop that's only a year old and working fine. Anyone have any less-drastic suggestions?

Hello LinInDel,

go the easy way without having to remove the battery, see instructions again.

I wish you much success.

I appreciate the suggestion, but it's uninstalling the battery and battery management system and doing into BIOS that scares me. I've just had too many bad experiences with uninstalling and reinstalling a component and things end up worse than before. But I am very grateful for your suggestions.

Hello,

Nothing should scare you

(1) Open

Device Manager

  >>Batteries

    >> right-click Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery

      >> click Uninstall device >>

(2) Then shutdown your computer, plugin your AC adapter and wait 2 hours, and no you just don't need to go into BIOS

(3) Start your notebook operating system, Windows will automatically reinstall it, no worry.

That's it.

Please report your results.

best regards

I followed the steps you outlined and, yes, Windows reinstalled the battery. But...when I ran Battery Check using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics or using HP Support Assistant, I still get the same results: Result - Cancelled; Calibrate Battery undefined.

I then tested the battery before Windows starts. The battery passed and, according to HP's handy chart at support.hp.com, that means the battery does not need calibration. But...when I reopen HP Support Assistant, I am still getting that maddening message that Battery Calibration needed.

I now know that the battery does not need calibration. I just need to make the HP Support Assistant message go away.

Which version of Support Assistant are you using ?

Please install the latest version: HP Support Assistant Version 9.16.80.0

Done, and it now says I have version 9.18.43. Still getting the message that my battery needs calibration...

Please send a screenshot of that message. You should be able to turn off this message.
