HP ENVY Laptop 13-ad1xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased an HP USB-C Universal Dock to use with my HP ENVY Laptop 13-ad1xx.  I hooked it up and everything (keyboard, mouse, monitor, and external speakers) works fine EXCEPT that the computer will not charge via the USB-C cable on the docking station.  Not sure if it is relevant, but HP Support Assistant on the Envy does not find the docking station when it looks for devices on the system.  I've tried the USB-C ports on both sides of the Envy and both connect the external devices and neither charge the PC.  Suggestions?

What is exactly your HP ENVY Laptop 13-ad1xx ?  Please use the following instructions to find out the model/product of your machine:

It is HP ENVY - 13-ad173cl.  The prior model is what the Support Assistant provided for me.

Your machine has  2 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, Power Delivery, DP1.2, HP Sleep and Charge) ports which support charging thru USB-C. Now, from the compatible list of the HP USB-C Universal Dock with 4.5 mm and USB Dock Adapter :

It is not FULLY compatible with Envy machine.

Interesting.  The HP sales person I chatted with told me that this docking station would be compatible with the laptop.  I bought the HP brand docking station because I wanted to make sure that they would work together.

Hello @LarryHDC,

Hmmm... The connection should theoretically be possible. Does the computer charge when no peripherals are connected and only the power supply to the hub is connected?

Also, try charging the computer with everything besides the power supply to the hub connected while the computer is shut off.

Kind regards,

Eddy
