I have been having an issue with my laptop. My mouse worked until earlier this evening. I had to restart my laptop ond now it won't allow my mouse to work. I have tried changing the battery, switching ports and even updated the BIOS. I'm not sure what changed. I use a Logitech wireless mouse. I even opened up a new mouse and plugged it in.  It won't work either. Both of them get a response from Windows, when I plug them in. I'm not understanding why this has happened. I'm not sure what to do. I eed to get the ability to use a mouse back. How do I fix this?

A side note: The mice don't show up in the list of mouse and pointing devices. I do, however, see them in the 'Other' list with the triangle with the exclamation point in it.

Hi @Bigtoes71

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.

You mention that the mouse stopped working because you had to restart the PC (after that). Something has changed in between and caused the issue ?

How about "turning back time" ? Try to perform System Restore in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present.

Click on Start button

Type control.exe  to open Control Panel

Go to System

Then click on "System Protection"

In the "System Protection" tab, open System Restore

Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system to a state before the issue started (like before the restart).

Open Device Manager by typing it in the search bar next to Start button. Once Device Manager appears in the list click it to open. Do you see any errors under Universal Serial Bus controllers? Any errors anywhere in Device Manager?

No errors. I was editing the post when you responded. There is a listing for "Other Devices". There is a "USB receiver" listed twice. I only have one plugged in.

I ran the trobleshooter. It installed something. I'll see if this works. It said the mouse was missing a driver.

Right click the device under Other and Uninstall it. Right click each usb receiver and Uninstall each. Reboot and see if any change.

If no change- right click the device under other devices and select Properties. In the window that opens click the Details tab. Get the hardware id for the device using the dropdown selector. Just the first half of top line for hardware id should be enough.

It just calls it a usb receiver. What happened to the device installer and the embedded drivers for this stuff? Shouldn't the driver for this be in the driver package for Windows?

HP Recommended

Yes, most drivers are there. Sometimes if there is a glitch and you Uninstall devices that aren't working and reboot they are automatically installed.

Not happening. It's telling me to replace and inf file. I tried. Apparently, I don't ave sufficient permission to do this on my laptop when I'm an administrator. This is nuts.

I will be offline for now but I noticed that @IT_WinSec is online. Perhaps he will pop in and assist.
