Hi @NewbieinTech,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re encountering a problem with the MSVCP140.dll file, which is a part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. This issue can prevent applications like Notepad from opening and might also affect other programs.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue.
Repair or Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable:
- Go to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable download page.
- Download and install the latest version of the Visual C++ Redistributable for both x64 and x86 if applicable.
- After installation, restart your computer and see if the issue is resolved.
Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM Tools:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator:
- Press Win + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Run the following commands:
sfc /scannow
- This command will scan and repair corrupted system files.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- This command will fix issues related to the system image.
Reinstall or Reset Apps:
- For Notepad and other built-in apps, you can reinstall or reset them through the Settings app:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Notepad in the list, click on it, and select Advanced options. Then, try Repair or Reset.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Check for updates and install any that are available. Sometimes updates can fix issues with system files and applications.
Perform a Clean Boot:
- Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with system processes.
- Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
- Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
- Disable all startup items.
- Restart your computer and see if the issue persists.
Check for Malware:
- Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus program to ensure that malware isn't causing the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
