Hi @That_M
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for sharing that—it’s genuinely frustrating when something as simple as keyboard lighting doesn’t respond, especially when the icon is right there on the F9 key.
Let’s bring some clarity and get those lights glowing again.
Step-by-Step: Fix Keyboard Backlight Not Turning On (Windows PC)
1. Try Fn + F9 Again
- Press Fn + F9 firmly once.
- Wait a few seconds to see if the light activates.
- If nothing happens, continue below.
2. Check BIOS Settings
Sometimes the keyboard backlight is disabled at the firmware level.
- Restart your PC and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
- Use arrow keys to navigate to System Configuration > Keyboard Lighting.
- Make sure it’s set to Auto or On.
- Press F10 to save and exit.
The BIOS interface may vary slightly depending on your model, but the lighting option is usually under System Configuration.
3. Update or Reinstall HP Hotkey Support
The hotkey functionality (like Fn + F9) depends on HP software.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
- Look for HP Hotkey Support. If it’s missing or outdated:
- Download the latest version from HP’s official site:
HP Hotkey Support for Windows
(Search using your exact PC model name)
- Download the latest version from HP’s official site:
4. Check Windows Mobility Settings
- Press Windows + X > Mobility Center.
- If available, look for Keyboard Backlight settings.
- Adjust brightness or timeout settings here.
5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
To rule out hardware issues:
- Download and run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows:
HP Diagnostics Tool - Use the Component Tests > Keyboard Test to verify functionality.
If none of these steps bring the backlight to life, it may be a deeper software or hardware issue. But let’s stay hopeful—most cases resolve with BIOS or hotkey updates.
