Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?

Hello,

I have a hp laptop 15-fd… and it does not charge anymore. I bought a new charger to replace the original: laptop still does not charge.

I just replaced the battery with an original hp one (AE03XL): still doesn’t charge.
Cannot turn on the laptop because there is no charge anymore.

What do I do next? Thank you.

Hi @23Joh-Pi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Since you have already replaced the charger and the battery without success, it is likely that the laptop's internal power management system or the charging port itself has entered a locked state. A "hard reset" is necessary to drain residual electricity and reset the embedded controller so the motherboard can recognize the power source again.

  1. Perform a hard reset to clear the power system.
    • Unplug the new AC adapter from the laptop and the wall outlet.
    • Disconnect the newly installed AE03XL internal battery from the motherboard connector.
    • Press and hold the power button for a full 15 to 30 seconds to drain all residual capacitance.

  1. Verify the power source and connection.
    • Plug the AC adapter directly into a known working wall outlet, avoiding any power strips or surge protectors.
    • Reconnect the internal battery firmly, ensuring the connector pins are fully seated.
    • Connect the AC adapter to the laptop’s charging port and check for the LED indicator light near the port.

  1. Attempt a forced boot-up.
    • Leave the laptop plugged in for at least 30 minutes without trying to turn it on.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to see if the charging LED changes color or blinks.
    • If the light is white or amber, press the power button once to attempt to boot into Windows.

Does the small LED light next to the charging port turn on or blink when you plug in the adapter?

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Thank you so much for your answer. I did perform a hard reset without battery installed and no charger plugged either. Then I installed the new battery, plugged the new charger and turned on the laptop: blue window appear with ‘Error 502’. After maybe 15 minutes charging, I realized I should have put the original battery in instead to be able to perform a Battery Report on it… so I removed charger and the new battery, then put the original battery in: same 502 error code. While charging, amber light was on, even when at 56% and 82% charge. Light was white at 100% though… (I don’t understand the meaning of that light!) It worked well and I was able to charge the original battery to 100%. Good!

I performed a Windows Battery Report on my original battery. How do I interpret it? If I understood correctly, those numbers might be useful: Full Charge Capacity= 34 447 and Design Capicity=41 041. Does that mean that battery is at 84% efficiency… and is still very good and I don’t need to replace it? Any other information that I should verify on the report regarding the battery??

NEW PROBLEM… which might be still the original problem: Charging!

Since then, I am pretty sure I charged once to full capacity with my original charger. Next time I tried to charge with original cable: no light. Then tried with the new charger: that was ok, laptop charged up to 100% without problem.

This morning, I used my laptop and when my battery was at 36% I figured that it might be a good idea to charge it. Tried the original charger cable first. Light turned on amber, and a little noise (1 second of soft whistling or sizzling… I  don’t know how to describe it?) coming from laptop and and then the light turned off… ???!! … I replaced charger with the new one: nothing. No light…???!!…Cannot charge now!! Grrrrr!!

I tried again 45 minutes later and almost same: original charger= amber light+ 1 sec noise + light turned off. Then new charger: light amber! Yes!!! Will charge!

Suggestions to get consistent charging??

Thanks 😊

Hi @23Joh-Pi,

Thanks for the detailed update, that really helps, and I can understand how frustrating this intermittent charging behavior must be.

About Your Battery Report

You interpreted it correctly.

  • Design Capacity: 41,041 mWh
  • Full Charge Capacity: 34,447 mWh

This puts your battery at roughly ~84% health, which is still considered good/usable.
So yes, your original battery does NOT need replacement at this point.

About the 502 Error

The “502” error typically refers to a CMOS checksum issue, which can happen after power resets or battery disconnection.
Since the system booted and worked afterward, it’s not a major concern right now, unless it keeps reappearing.

Quick Checks You Can Still Try

Inspect Charging Port

  • Check if the port feels loose or wobbly
  • Try gently adjusting the angle of the connector while plugged in
If charging cuts in/out > confirms port issue

Static Discharge Reset (Repeat Cleanly)

  • Power off
  • Disconnect charger
  • Disconnect battery
  • Hold power button 30–40 seconds
  • Reconnect everything and test

Test Without Battery

  • Remove battery
  • Plug in charger
  • Try powering ON

If unstable or shuts off > points to motherboard/DC jack

That brief sizzling/whistling sound is NOT normal.
I would strongly recommend not repeatedly forcing charging attempts, as this could worsen the issue.

Since:

  • Battery is healthy
  • Two chargers tested
  • Issue is inconsistent + electrical noise present

This is very likely a hardware fault (DC jack or motherboard power circuit)

Best course of action:

  • Visit an authorized HP service center
  • Ask for:
    • DC jack inspection/replacement
    • Power rail / motherboard diagnostics

About the LED Behavior

  • Amber light > Charging
  • White light > Fully charged

That part is working as expected, the issue is the instability before charging can continue.

This seems like a hardware issue and it will need a repair, I would request you to contact the nearest service center for assistance, if the device is out of warranty, it may incur charges
