My new Envy does not accept high density external usb hard disks. I have an 8 and 4 terrabytes and they simply look up. The disk manager fails to recognize the connected drives after a few minutets and the virtual disk services report errors in the event viewer.
Two notes:
1. smaller USB external hard drive 600 Gb, 250Gb work fine.
2. The same USB external hard disks work flawlessly on my older HP Envy product number M9X67AV and on a friends laptop. HP service will not help because they say these are not part of the unit. Go figure. If anyone had this type of issue or any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

If you could post model of drives you are using would be helpful. It is possible that they may have older usb chips in them that are not compatible with newer faster USB standards.
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do not work for HP nor speak for HP.

Thank you Repairatrooper for responding to my SOS. I was desperately trying to find the solution to my problem since neither HP or Seagate have answers. Instead, they bounce the issue to the other and I am in the middle holding the bag.
To answer your question:
Both Seagate drive have USB 3.0 micro-B connector on the back and they are both powered.
The 8T drive is Seagate Backup Plus Hub Model: SRD0PV1 p/n: 1XAAP3-500. Purchased 2019
The 4T drive is Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive Model: SRD0NF2 PN: 1TFAP3-500 Purchased about 2017
They work fine on a USB 2.0 port on my older HP Envy and my 2012R2 server. It fails after a short while on my new laptop that only has USB 3.0 ports. I tried them on all three ports of the laptop. I tried them only one at a time.
However, if I connect a USB 2.0 Micro-B cable to the connector on the back of the drive it works fine. Of course without the connect connector it is only a 2.0 with a lesser transfer speed.
I hate having a 4 & 8T drive running 2.0 and watching my bear grow while it transfers large amount of data.
NOTE: I was looking at the PassMark Software USB 3.0 Loopback plug but I would need to put out $120.00 just to see it and it may not give me valuable information to fix the problem.

I really appreciate you taking a stab at this problem. Thank you.
