Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am having some difficulty charging an accessory by using the USB port while lid is shut on my laptop.  I made a modification in the Device Manager setting by unchecking the box that allows power to generate when there is something connected to the USB port.  On a side note, I only have one option named: USB Hub Root 3.0.  The other two listed are: USB Intel eXtensible Host Controller and USB composite device.  I have also reviewed the battery options and have disabled the USB selective suspend setting for the computer options "On Battery" and "Plugged In."

In addition to that, I attempted accessing the BIOS and looked around but I do not see a separate setting for USB power.  May I ask what I should do?  This is for a book light that has a USB connector.

Thanks.

@watkd25,

A very warm welcome to the HP community. A very good day to you.

I understand that you have an HP Laptop 15-bs0xx and would like the USB ports to remain powered off when the laptop is in sleep mode. I'll do my best to help you.

I did some research on this issue and suggest you perform the following steps:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Navigate down to Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • On each USB Root Hub item, right-click and choose Properties
  • Click on the Power Management tab and un-check the box for Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Update the BIOS

Thank you for your response.  I actually want to have the USB port power on when the computer is sleeping.  From the instructions you left, I downloaded the updated BIOS from the Hewlett-Packard website link you provided.

I will update you on whether or not it will work.

I downloaded the BIOS and the when I shut the lid on the laptop the accessory will still not charge.

@watkd25,

You have done the basic troubleshooting as per the document and the notebook needs to check to get to know its hardware is faulty, not a software issue.

I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer or HP Chat Support Team.
