Hi,
Charging my laptop through the USB Type-C® Thunderbolt™ ports does work - I use a 65W Macbook charger while the device is operational (and not just when it is off / in sleep mode), and I can continue to work on my laptop while it is charging (although, charging is slow compared to the AC adaptor). However, it requires a workaround, which I am hoping can be fixed.
First, if I directly plug in the 65W USB charger, I get an error message - "For Full Performance, connect a higher capacity Power Adapter. Your computer will run in reduce performance mode and may not charge." Unsurprisingly, the USB charger does not work, and the laptop continues to run on the battery and drain it.
Now, the workaround. I connect the AC adapter and then connect the 65W USB charger. This time, I get the message - "HP recommends using an original power adapter from HP". Next, I disconnect the AC adapter. Surprisingly, the USB charger continues to power the laptop AND charge the battery. I have tried it multiple times - each time the battery has been charged all the way to 100%.
Therefore, either the device firmware or the Windows software has a bug, or this has been intentionally disabled by HP, which feels wrong. Hoping someone here, or HP, can help figure it out quickly. I'm certain this is critical for many, as it is for me. Without this, I'll have to return the device, and get an lenovo / ASUS device instead.
Thanks.

I have precisely the same observation. After applying the trick, which you described, my Envy 16 gets properly charged while I am working (USB-C charging would probably not be enough for games but I do not care - I use it only for work).
It seems this is intentionally blocked by HP - and I agree this should not happen.
@HP - any solution / suggestion?

Hi HP Support,
Still waiting for a solution. Carrying around the brick of a charger is less than ideal, especially when my work laptop and phone can be charged using the same USB charger. Any way to escalate this?
