Lately, my laptop is unable to power on even when plugged in. I realised that the Charging Light next to my Charging Port will not light on when plugged in and it cannot power on even with the battery. I suspect that it might be a power issue, but after some time, it managed to switch on. Can the CMOS battery be at fault?

Hi @RezdaImran0480,

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with the charging light not turning ON on your HP notebook. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Does the laptop shutdown right away if the charger is disconnected from the laptop?

Have you tried to use a different compatible charger and check if it helps?

Did this happen after a power surge or power outage?

Can the CMOS battery be at fault? No, If your computer is losing its time or date settings, or you are receiving a message CMOS Read ErrorCMOS Checksum Error, or CMOS Battery Failure, the CMOS battery needs to be replaced.

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook: A power reset (or hard restart) clears all information from the computer's memory without erasing any personal data. Performing a power reset might fix conditions such as Windows not responding, a blank display, software freezing, keyboard stops responding, or other external devices locking up.

  1. Examine the adapter and power cord for physical damage

  2. Test the power from the AC wall outlet to the notebook connector

  3. Start computer using the battery only

  4. Check that the lid switch moves freely

  5. When you have completed the troubleshooting steps, there should be power available to the computer. When you press the power button, the LEDs should glow, and you should hear the sounds of the fan and the hard drive spinning.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Once when I use my computer, I realised that the light on the Network button is not static (flickering) and the keyboard is hard to type on (most keys are unresponsive). Even when using battery the same thing happened.

Hi @RezdaImran0480,

As I understand you are having issues with the charging light does not light up when plugged in, and you are having issues with the keyboard is not responsive. This definitely looks like a possible hardware failure. I would then suggest you to contact HP phone support to create a service for your Notebook. If the notebook is out of warranty, you might need to pay for the repair.

I managed to find the problem by my self. The keyboard (which I swapped from a Compaq CQ42. Similar model design with the G42) draw more power than the laptop can handle. Thus the reason why the light on the Network key keeps flickering and no power received by the power cord. I managed to swap it back to the original battery and now it works fine. Case closed. Thanks for helping.
