Hello,
i bought my laptop in 2021. At some point, the original charger got broken and I ended up using a universal usb c charger instead. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to finally upgrade to Windows 11. After the upgrade I was instructed to update the BIOS as well. I truely regret agreeing to that. After the BIOS update, the laptop wouldn't charge from the usb c charger. I researched online what to do and I applied a lot of solutions to no end. Now, I got to turn the laptop off all the time and perform a power cycle, so it could charge while it is turned off. As soon as I turn it back on, the charging stops (indicated by the battery light and by the system). I don't know what to do and I was hoping to avoid buying a new charger for an older laptop. Feel free to get into the weeds with me, I'm willing to try any solutions. Thanks!

Hi @Nour31,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
We understand how frustrating it is to experience charging issues after a BIOS update, especially when your HP Pavilion x360 14 Convertible PC (14-dy0000, 23S38AV) was working fine with a USB-C charger before. We appreciate your detailed explanation and your willingness to dive deep into the issue.
Steps to Resolve USB-C Charging Issues
1. Confirm USB-C Port Capabilities
Not all USB-C ports support charging. Please verify that your laptop’s USB-C port is labelled with Power Delivery (PD). If it’s not, charging may only work under specific conditions or with HP-certified adapters.
2. Perform a Full Power Reset
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect all peripherals and the charger.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the charger and power on.
This clears residual power and resets embedded controller logic.
3. Reinstall HP Firmware and Chipset Drivers
BIOS updates can sometimes disrupt USB controller behavior. Reinstalling the chipset and power management drivers may help.
- Visit the official HP driver page:

Download and install:
- Intel Chipset Driver
- Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI)
- HP System Event Utility
- HP BIOS Utility (if available)
4. Check BIOS Settings
- Restart and press F10 to enter BIOS.
- Navigate to Advanced > Power Management.
- Look for any USB-C or power delivery settings.
- If available, enable USB-C charging or reset to defaults.
5. Try HP Certified Charger
While we understand your desire to avoid buying a new charger, please note that HP laptops may reject non-certified USB-C chargers after firmware updates. If possible, test with an HP 65W USB-C charger to confirm compatibility.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
