Hi. A month ago I updated my Windows os. The kind of routine update where you reboot the computer and the update installs during the reboot. Since then, I have had two charging issues:

1) There is an LED by the charging plug. It is orange when charging, and white when fully charged. This is no longer reliable. It sometimes works as it should, but is often white when the laptop is still charging, implying it is done. But it isn't.

2) It will not charge to 100% anymore. A few days ago it maxed out at 83%, today it maxed out at 87%. It is always in this general range.

I never had these problems before the Windows update a month ago. What can I do to get return my laptop's charging behavior to normal?

Hi @MattL_2

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

Please reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and check if that helps

Step 01. Click on the Start Button
Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: This Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again
Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook
Step 06. Remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter ( For Notebooks with Removable Batteries )
Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter and restart

Next update the BIOS from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

If the issue persists run a Battery Test again to confirm the Hardware Functionality

- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
- When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the main menu, click Component Tests and Power > Battery

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I followed the two steps. I uninstalled the item from the device manager and had it reinstalled. Then I updated my BIOS. And just for the sake of it I ran the battery test which was a success. I will get back after a day or so of testing to confirm whether or not these methods worked.

Hi. I appreciate the advice. However I followed your steps and it did not solve the problem. I plugged in my laptop this morning when the battery was low. After a few hours the LED changed from orange to white. So I opened the laptop and the battery was at 84%. I left it plugged in and after another hour it was still at 84%.

@MattL_2,

What is the BIOS version installed on your computer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you restore the BIOS defaults following the steps in the below article and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi. This is the BIOS version:      BIOS Version/Date Insyde F.22, 5/27/2020

Keep in mind I just updated it a few days ago, as instructed.

As far as restoring the BIOS defaults, I believe the link you provided is for a different BIOS version. It looks nothing like mine when I powered on the PC and pressed F10  (mind did not have an option on the "main" menu to restore defaults). So I was unable to do that.

I'm wondering if I just need a new battery?
