HP ENVY - 17-ce0014na
Microsoft Windows 11

A couple of weeks ago, I heard a loud cracking sound, which was followed by a strong chemical smell. The smell persisted, but I was unable to locate its source.

Sniffing my HP laptop's exhaust outlet, I can smell the same smell.

I see others have reported on this website a similar chemical smell problem with their HP laptops, but the replies, from what I can see, have been given via private message.

My laptop is 3 1/4 years old.

To add, the laptop is normally always plugged into the power supply. The laptop battery is at 0% and it will not charge. I'm pretty sure this wasn't the case a couple of weeks ago.

Last night, the laptop was making some electrical/hard drive-type noises, which it doesn't normally do. This morning, the laptop was turning itself off a few times, although I'm pretty certain this wasn't due to overheating. The laptop was plugged into a 4-socket extension lead (with nothing else plugged in). I've now connected it directly to the wall socket, and it hasn't turned itself off so far.

Maybe it's the battery that's causing this smell?

I don't currently have a mini hex/allen key to open the bottom of the laptop to investigate.

The smell is a bit like a felt-tip pen.

I removed the back of the laptop (Torx screwdriver needed).

The battery was bulging and the chemical smell was coming from a corner of it. I removed the battery and put it in a plastic bag in the garden, so the house doesn't smell of chemicals any more.

There's some discolouration/staining on the inside of the laptop base, so possibly an indication of chemical leak.

My HDD D Drive is failing to pass the hard drive test, so, given the timing, it may have been damaged by chemicals.
