What might be the manufacturer or make & model number choices, other than HP, for RAM a upgrade to 16 GB for HP 15-dy2000 series laptop, perhaps to DDR5 SODIMM, from existing 8 GB.

If your notebook has one 8 GB memory chip installed, I'd go with one of these 8 GB chips to install in the empty slot.
Crucial 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM | CT8G4SFRA32A | Crucial.com
You cannot instal DDR5 memory in a notebook that comes with DDR4 memory because:
DDR5 memory runs at a lower voltage than DDR4 memory.
DDR5 memory has a different number of contact pins than DDR4 memory.
The slot in the DDR5 memory circuit board is cut in a different place than it is in a DDR4 memory chip, making it impossible to fit a DDR5 memory chip in a DDR4 memory slot.
HP only has the service manual for the original 15-dy0xxx model series available, but it should be of help to you for opening up the notebook to install the memory:

There's also a service teardown video for the older model series:

Thank you Paul for your timely and almost excellent reply, based on what you knew. I run Windows 10, 64 bit. Your heads up on DDR5 explains why the DDR5 I tried to install did not exactly fit and was returned. I'll follow your advice and a DDR4 will be ordered, however, of my 2 slots, one has an SSD in it and the other is an original 8 GB. I will look for your recommended Crucial module, but in 16 Gb, having only that 1 slot open. My prior attempt went smoothly, except as stated above, and, unless I still have this wrong, I should be okay, thanks to your really good advice. Frank Kessler

You're very welcome, Frank.
The notebook only has one memory slot?
The service manual indicates notebooks with the Intel core processors have two memory slots, and the parts list for your notebook indicates it came with an Intel i3-1115G4 Core processor.
The service video also shows two memory slots at minute 4:23.
Cheers,
Paul

Not surprisingly, 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz 2.80 GHz with 500 GB SSD was what I just copied from "This PC" system properties. It also surprisingly stated HP ZBook 14?? I thought I purchased a 15 inch, but it's hooked into a 32 inch monitor so, no problem. I did order the Crucial you recommended in the 16 GB. When opened, I took a Google lens picture of the module in the 2nd slot and it came back as an SSD, which was what I purchased. Maybe that's an explanation to why there's only one memory slot. No other slots appeared on the motherboard, or elsewhere. Again Paul, thanks! Frank

Hi, Frank:
Run the Windows system information app and post the product number of your PC that will be found on the System SKU line.
That way I can give you the service manual to the actual model notebook you have.

Hi, Frank:
The parts list for the 383K8UA#ABA product number indicates that your notebook came with an i7-1165G7 processor.
There should be two memory slots in the notebook with that processor, unless HP made some drastic changes between the 15-dy0xxx model series and the 15-dy2xxx model series.

Paul, I somehow came upon your 10-20-22 response to a very similar question, by someone else, to mine here. In it you led me to discover the MAX RAM I have is 32 GB. Not sure I need that much but, if I open it again and find out the 2nd slot is an SSD, rather than a 4 Gb RAM, then my newly ordered 16 GB will be okay, replacing a 4 GB. Alternatively, if I have 2 memory slots with 4 GB in each one, as you suspect, I'm not sure where the SSD is located and I will have another RAM decision coming up then. Frank

Hi, Frank:
The product specs for your notebook indicates that it has 2 x 4 GB of memory, so both slots are filled.
HP Laptop 15-dy2172wm Product Specifications | HP® Support
You will have to remove one of the 4 GB memory chips to install the 16 GB chip and you will have 20 GB of memory running in single channel mode instead of the dual channel mode the 2 x 4 GB of memory is running in now.
You may want to order the second 16 GB memory chip, so you have 32 GB of memory running in dual channel mode.
I encourage you to watch the service video I posted so you can see where the memory is located and where the M.2 NVMe SD is located.
The memory removal and replacement procedure starts at 4:23 into the video and the SSD removal and replacement procedure starts at 5:11 into the video.
Cheers,
Paul
