My Chromebook will only startup once in a great while and I’ve tried all the hold buttons steps to no avail, the time I did get it to start up the battery said it was full so I unplugged it, it ran for I’m thinking around twelve hours, than I plugged it back in and let it charge for awhile, went to start it up and nothing, oh yeah the charging light gos out if I unplug it

Hi @Rockar

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern with your Chromebook 14g5 not starting consistently. It is positive that the device did run for several hours when it did start, which indicates that the battery was able to hold charge. Since the charging light goes out when unplugged and the system does not respond to the usual button combinations, let us proceed with recommended checks:

Perform a Hardware Reset

  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and try powering on the Chromebook again.

Check the AC Adapter and Charging Port

  • Ensure the adapter is firmly connected to both the Chromebook and the wall outlet.
  • If available, test with another compatible HP adapter to confirm power delivery.

Battery Status in Recovery Mode

  • Press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press the Power button.
  • Release all keys when the recovery screen appears.
  • If the system reaches recovery, note whether the battery indicator shows charging when the adapter is connected.

Update Chromebook Firmware (EC Reset)

  • With the Chromebook powered off, press and hold Refresh + Power for 10 seconds.
  • Release the keys and allow the Chromebook to attempt startup.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
