Hello, my Chromebook x2 only works when plugged in. Does this mean I need to replace the battery? Any websites I can use to test the battery or something to see if that’s the problem.

Hi @LuccasG,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your Chromebook x2 only works when it is plugged in. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check the battery status using Chromebook Diagnostics
Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics.
Under the Battery section, check battery health, cycle count, and whether the battery is detected.

Run a battery discharge test
In the Diagnostics app, run the battery discharge test while the charger is unplugged.
If the test fails or the Chromebook shuts down immediately, the battery is likely not holding a charge.

Use the Crosh battery test
Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open Crosh, then type battery_test 300 and press Enter.
This runs a short battery test and shows whether the battery is discharging normally.

Observe behavior when unplugging the charger
Fully charge the Chromebook, then unplug the charger.
If the device shuts off instantly or the battery percentage drops to 0%, this strongly indicates a failing battery.

Perform a basic power reset
Turn off the Chromebook, unplug the charger, and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.
Reconnect the charger, power it on, and check if the battery is now detected.

Check ChromeOS is up to date
Go to Settings > About ChromeOS and install any available updates.
Outdated firmware can sometimes cause incorrect battery reporting.

Confirm battery detection
If Diagnostics shows “Battery not detected” or health is extremely low, the battery is no longer functioning correctly.
In this case, normal operation without the charger is not possible.

I hope this helps.

Hey - thank you for the reply. Below is a screenshot of the crosh test. I coudln't run a test under diagnostics, it doesnt show a test for battery. Only a system, connectivity and keyboard menus.

I can't operate the device without being plugged in, as soon as i remove the battery plug it does black.

Hi @LuccasG,

Thank you for sharing the screenshot. From what I see in the Crosh output:

The repeated warnings “Ignoring reading with battery charge 0 and battery-full charge 4.157”

The line “No battery found”

This clearly indicates that your Chromebook is no longer detecting the internal battery.

What this means:

The system cannot use the battery at all. It is effectively non-functional.

The Chromebook will only run when plugged into AC power.

The Crosh test failing and the Diagnostics app not showing battery tests is expected behavior because the OS cannot communicate with a missing or dead battery.

This is a hardware issue, the battery has failed or lost electrical connection. There is no software or reset fix that will restore battery functionality.
