Compaq Presario CQ57-339WM
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Presario CQ57-339WM which I want to upgrade.

The laptop currently has a Celeron B800 1.5 GHz 2 core processor. The motherboard (baseboard) is a Hewlett Packard Product 3672 version 23.48. and the physical memory (RAM) is 2.00 GB.

What is the fasted Intel i5 processor this unit can be upgraded to? I don't do gaming but I do often use Photoshop and large Excel spreadsheets. Please make several suggestions.

In another thread I read where an i7 runs too fast and would cause overheating but if that’s not true, please let me know. I'm not opposed to installing a Intel i7 processor as long as the price isn't too high. If these are usable, you might want to suggest one or two of these as well.

Most threads I’ve read say the maximum RAM I can upgrade to is 8GB. However on one site where I typed in my laptop make and model offered an 8GB chipset they said was compatible with my computer which means if I add it to my existing 2GB chipset would give me 10GB. They also offered a 16GB chipset which they said is compatible with my computer, so I’m confused.

I want to be able to install these myself without problems like having the laptop overheat or hardware conflicts. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

The supported Intel Sandy Bridge processors (same family as yours), can be found in chapter 1 on page 1.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02948186

The best processor you can upgrade to would be the Intel Core i5-2430M.

The manual states the max memory you can install is 2 x 4 GB.

The Sandy Bridge chipset would support 2 x 8 GB of memory, but since that configuration is not listed as supported in the service manual, it would be a risky gamble on your part to install an 8 GB memory chip.

The usually reliable Crucial memory report for your notebook also indicates the max is 8 GB.

Hi Paul

I was surprised to see how fast you responded to my inquiry. Thank You.

I went to the Intel site and typed in Intel Core i5-2430M to read about this processor but they say it has been discontinued. Does Intel have a replacement for this processor or Is there another processor that is compatible with my system of equal speed or faster?

Thank you again for your timely response.

Yes Intel has not made 2d generation Core processors for some number of years but they are still in the supply pipeline. Amazon or eBay will have them. Just look for a "Prime" or highly rated seller.

This is a US based seller I have used for years:

You can find the cpu cheaper if you are willing to have it shipped from China. Good luck.

You're very welcome, Keith.

You would have to buy a used but tested and working processor on eBay.   Maybe there are listings for new ones.  I see some listed as 'open box.'

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=i5-2430m&_sacat=175673&_sop=15

You can only install one of the Sandy Bridge processors listed in the service manual, and they have all been discontinued years ago.
