HP Pavilion - 14-bf103na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm looking to increase the storage capacity of my HP Pavilion - 14 (bf103na), I currently have the 256GB M.2 SSD that came with the laptop, but my laptop is full now. The laptop has an empty slot where a 7mm HDD/SSD could be intstalled.

As far as I can tell I have two options. Either replace the M.2 SSD or install a separate 7mm SSD alongside it. Obviously the latter option would be best, but I'm put off a little by how expensive getting the necessary parts would be. Could anyone confirm the parts I would need? If I got a 7mm SSD would I need all of:

  • Left and right hard drive brackets:  934983-001 and 934984-001
  • Solid-state drive adapter bracket:  L00160-001
  • Solid-state drive adapter board:  L00159-001
  • Solid-state drive board cable:  L01440-001

I found these via the manual. From what I can find online these add up to around £165, before I've even bought the SSD!

To save money I may replace the M.2 SSD but I don't want to buy one that may be incompatible. Could someone confirm if the following would be compatible?

And how would I be able to tell if they would be compatible?

Thank you!

To add a 2.5 inch wide 7mm thick laptop hard drive or SSD you would need these 3 parts:

(3) Hard drive brackets
Left 934983-001
Right 934984-001
(4) Hard drive connector/cable (not illustrated) 930596-001

HP Parts Store actually has these in stock if you follow the links above for a total price of $61 US.

The M.2 SSD is a SATA variety and an NVME/PCIe type will not work. The issue for you is how the M.2 you have is installed.

Your laptop can be configured with an M.2 in one of two ways. There is a separate dedicated M.2 slot and then there is also an option to have an adapter plate where an M.2 connects with a cable into the same bay where a 2.5 inch drive would go.

Adapter plate = green dedicated M.2 slot = redAdapter plate = green dedicated M.2 slot = red

So if your M.2 is on an adapter plate you would have to move it over to the main slot circled in red and then get a different adapter plate and cable to install the 2.5 inch HDD or SSD. Or you could move the 256 you have over to the main slot and then add another SATA M.2 without needing any adapter equipment.

But I sense your 256 is already in the dedicated M.2 slot so you need some kind of adapter board to add any kind of storage disk. Anticipating your questions, the speed of a 2.5inch SATA SSD is the same as a SATA M.2; no speed advantage either way you go.

A 500 gig SATA M.2 is about $100:

A 500 gig 2.5 inch SATA SSD is about $80:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=860+Ev...

So if the parts to install a 2.5 inch disk cost at least $61 you can do the math here after you open it up to see what you already have as to which way is better for you to go.

Thank you for your fast and detailed response; very helpful!

You were correct in thinking the 256GB M.2 that came with the laptop is connected in the slot circled in red in the diagram you posted.

Thank you for clearing up the parts I need, that's all making sense now. I'm in the UK and unfortunately the parts aren't available via the HP parts store. They're only available via a parts reseller who's charging £90 for those 3 parts.

I think my best option is to buy a 1TB M.2 SATA SSD to replace my current one. I believe both the SSDs I posted before were SATA and not NVME/PCIe.

Thanks again!

Yes I think that is your best option; glad to have helped.

Hi.. Could you please confirm if you managed to install the 1tb M.2 SSD? I am planning to do the same, but the PC manual says the maximum option is 512Gb.

Thanks,

Yep, the 1TB works fine. I installed WD Blue 3D NAND Internal SSD M.2 SATA - 1 TB, but any other M2 SATA should work.

Edit: I installed it ~8 months ago and I've had no problems.
