Hello @GMichel .
You can use external hard drives either 3.0 or 3.1, although they will go at the speed of the usb port you connect it to as I am sure your computer has USB 2.0 ports but it will take advantage of the full speed of the port.
There are some external hard drives of the adata brand that are certified to withstand splashes, drops and dust, this I tell you in case you want to take it into account.
Greetings!

You can use all standard USB external drives (USB 2.0 or USB 3.0). They are much cheaper now.
You can also use wireless external HDD's or NAS. On my 11 years old machine, I can hook it to my NAS.
Note: You can use 3.5", 2.5" or SSD but please stick with USB 3.0 2.5" even your machine only has USB 2.0. external SSD's are more expensive, but not faster on your machine.
Regards.
