Common problems for Battery

Hello,

My laptop has recently developed a battery charging issue, and I would appreciate any insight or suggestions.

Initially, I suspected the charger or cable. I measured the adapter output with a multimeter and confirmed that it provides the correct voltage. So the charger itself does not seem to be the problem.

Here is the exact behavior I am observing:

  • When the laptop is completely powered off, it charges normally.
If I let it charge until full while powered off, the orange LED stays solid, indicating continuous charging without interruption then turns into white  means that battery is full.

  • The moment I press the power button to turn the laptop on, the white charging LED blinks briefly for about a second and then turns off, and charging immediately stops.

  • After the system boots, I can clearly see in the operating system that the battery is NOT fully charged.

  • While the laptop is powered on, it behaves as if the battery is already full and refuses to charge.

Additional information:

  • The battery is not at the end of its life. I can still use the laptop for approximately 2.5–3 hours on battery power.

  • This issue started suddenly and was not gradual.

  • Unfortunately, it began about one week after my warranty expired.

At this point, I see two main possibilities:

  1. A hardware-related issue in the battery management system or charging circuitry.

  2. A software or firmware-related issue (BIOS, EC firmware, battery calibration, drivers, or OS-level misreporting) where the system incorrectly believes the battery is fully charged when powered on.

Before taking the laptop to a service center and paying for repairs, I would like to confirm whether this could be caused by a software or firmware issue that I might be able to resolve myself.

I am open to all opinions, experiences, and suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

Hi @MericAA,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact HP laptop model and product number (you can find this by pressing Fn + Esc or checking the sticker under the laptop).
  • The version of Windows or operating system you are currently using.

In the meantime, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1.  Hard Reset
    • Shut down the laptop completely.
    • Disconnect the charger
    • Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge residual power.
    • Reconnect the battery and charger, then power on the laptop.
  2. Update BIOS and Drivers
    • Visit the https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers  and check for the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your model.
    • Install any available updates, as outdated firmware can cause charging miscommunication.
  3. Battery Calibration
    • In Windows, let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts down.
    • Charge it back to 100% while powered off.
    • Boot into Windows and check if the charging behavior improves.
  4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run the Battery Test to check the health and charging status.
    • Share the results with us so we can interpret them.

I hope this helps.

Hello Deep_Word,

Thank you for your warm welcome.

Laptop Model: Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 16-s0xxx
Product Number: 7Z4P9EA#AB8

Below are the steps I have already tried and the current situation:

  1. I performed a hard reset, but it did not resolve the issue. After the reset, I received a CMOS 502 (checksum is invalid) message.
The laptop can still be powered on, and it charges normally while it is turned off.

  2. My current BIOS version is Insyde F.29 (26.03.2025). I noticed that a newer BIOS version is available. However, the system does not allow me to proceed with the BIOS update because it requires the laptop to be charging, and the adapter is not detected while the laptop is powered on.

  3. I tried fully draining the battery and charging it back to 100%, then draining it again to 1%, and attempting to recharge. Unfortunately, neither attempt solved the issue.

  4. I ran the HP Battery Test:

    • With no AC power connected, the test passed.

    • With AC power connected, the system did not recognise ( It thought no AC power connected) the adapter and prompted me to unplug and plug it back in. This resulted in a Component Test: Failed with the following details:

      • Failure ID: QC0HU3-BT7D0J-XD7WXG-C19303

      • Pass ID: 25887-25910-00456

I believe this diagnosis may be misleading because the adapter’s voltage output is correct, and as mentioned above, the laptop does charge properly when it is powered off.

At this point, I am open to any other solutions or recommendations you may have.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Hi @MericAA,

Thanks for your response. It looks like you’re still having issue with the unit.

I appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout the process.

Based on what you’ve described including the CMOS 502 error, the system not detecting the AC adapter while powered on, the inability to proceed with the BIOS update, and the failed HP Battery Test with Failure ID QC0HU3-BT7D0J-XD7WXG-C19303 it does appear that the issue may be related to a hardware component rather than a software or firmware setting.
