I have a ZBook 14u G6 which I have always connected to my G2 dock via its built-in cable (the built-in cable has a power lead and a Thunderbolt lead which are joined together and hard-wired into the dock).
Also on the dock, just above where the hardwired connection goes in, is a Thunderbolt connector. I have tried to connect via a USB-C to USB-C Thunderbolt 3 100W cable, but my laptop doesn't recognise the dock.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure it must be very simple!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

From the manual of your machine, you should be able to use HP Elite USB-C Dock G4, HP USB-C Universal Dock, HP Thunderbolt Dock 120 W G2, and HP USB-C Mini Dock.
Do you have HP Thunderbolt Dock 120 W G2 dock ? If yes, please install Firmware and Driver on the following link

Hope this helps
Regard.

Thank you for your kind reply.
I have checked the spec and my dock is actually HP Thunderbolt Dock 230W G2 with Combo Cable. It was supplied with my laptop and the dock connects correctly using the combo cable.
I found the ran the firmware update and everything was already up-to-date.
The dock does not work when I connect via a USB-C to USB-C Thunderbolt 3.0 100W Cable into the Thunderbolt port just above the combo cable on this picture...
Thank you again for your help - if you have any further suggestions, that would be great.
