Hi Community,

Since the start of the week I have been receiving a 'counterfeit battery check - battery might not be HP original' warning message on start-up. The message says that fast charging might not be available. Since then, my battery won't charge beyond 9%. I bought my notebook at a reputable retail outlet two years ago and, as far as I know, my battery is an HP original.

Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Thanks

Hi @hector210,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. The "Counterfeit battery check – battery might not be HP original" warning and the battery not charging beyond 9% are often linked to either:

  1. Battery health degradation, or
  2. Firmware/BIOS miscommunication, or
  3. A genuine HP battery is being misidentified due to a software or chip issue.

Here's how to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this:

1. Run HP Battery Check

Use HP’s diagnostic tool to check battery health:

  • Download and run: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows
  • Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Test

If the battery fails, it may need replacement—even if it’s original.

2. Update BIOS and Battery Drivers

  • Go to HP Support and enter your laptop’s model number: Official HP® Support.
  • Download and install:
    • The latest BIOS
    • HP System Event Utility
    • Battery firmware update (if available)

3. Perform a Battery Reset

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Unplug the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Plug in the charger and power on.

4. Check Battery in Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager > Batteries
  • Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and uninstall it.

Restart your laptop—Windows will reinstall it automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
