Compaq presario cq56-115DX
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a compaq cq56-115DX, and I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the cpu. If it is possible to upgrade the cpu, is the AMD phenom ii x4 970 supported? Also, would this upgrade from the default cpu significantly boost gaming performance?

Thanks.

You have the AMD V140 processor which is a descendant of what used to be called Sempron processors, the budget end of laptop processors. The Phenom II you ask about is a desktop processor, and is not the same socket so would not work.

Here is your Service Manual:

Manual

The best processor that would plug in the socket on your motherboard is:

AMD Athlon II N370 processor (2.5 GHz, 1-MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz, 3.2 GT/s)-- dual-core 35 W 634686-001

All the version of the CQ56 have UMA or integrated video. Upgrading to the Athlon from the V140 would not make gaiming significantly better. The whole setup is not designed for any kind of serious gaming. It was an entry level laptop when it was sold 8 years ago and not able to take any kind of upgrade to bring it to current standards and performance.

Sorry.

Thank you for your reply!

Is there any other way that I could boost gaming performance such as a ram upgrade or newer hard drive?

Also, would it be worth it to just buy a laptop specifically for gaming instead of buying parts to upgrade the cq56?

You got the gist of my response. There is just nothing you can do. RAM and hard drive are not going to make gaming any better on that platform. Gaming takes video processing power and you just can't wring that out of that machine. Invest your money in a new laptop.

Post back with any more questions but please accept as solution if this is the answer you needed.
