OMEN by HP Laptop 17-an0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

Only very recently the past week I have been getting random in game crashes that make the screen go black but the laptop itself is still running, it won't let me do anything after that unless i turn off the power and restart. I get no error message to help explain what this could be. I have been trying to do a lot of research into this and the closest thing I am able to find is that it could be a faulty PSU which is causing components to crash (in this case I am assuming the GPU) when the demand is getting too high. I want to add as well the my PC can run games on ultra settings fine but even when I change to the lowest settings possible this is still happening.

Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz

RAM - 16GB

GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

Thank you to anyone who can help! 🙂

I just want to add to this quick as well that I have done some temperature scans and my CPU is hitting 98 degrees and I am assuming this could be the root cause of the crashing, I have never had problems with overheating before and only recently cleaned out the laptop from dust, could it be the thermal paste?

@a_crisp94 Here's what I suggest we do, to resolve the issue with overheating and as for the device crashing: click here for steps, let's get started:

Click here for steps to resolve overheating issues, you could try reducing the resolution on the in-game settings and switch the windows settings to performance rather than visual effects to make a minor change, however, the game may heat up your PC, hence make sure you are using a cooling pad as well, to be on a safer side.

Here's how you change windows settings:

  • Go to Start Menu > click on Settings.
  • Type performance > choose to Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
  • In the new window, go to the Visual Effects and select Adjust for best performance.
  • click Apply and Ok...this should do the trick.

I must let you know that its normal for a gaming PC to heat up, and with an Intel CPU such as the one you have, there's nothing to worry about, for details on why you don't need to worry: Click here to go through the CPU specifications, look under Tjunction of the CPU, it supports up to 100°C.

P.S: Welcome to HP Community 😉
