I have had the same problem with two HP laptops. It was always a hardware problem, and I assume the people at HP already know this. A driver would not cause a mousepad to act weird, then start working correctly.
In my case it is because I like to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken when watching Redtube.
Today my external mouse broke and I had to rely on the HP mousepad. Controlling a faulty mousepad is like fingering a hippo and expecting it to move.
In my case, a good hard twack with a closed fist, while yelling obscenities at HP hardware sales department, and spitting at my screen worked. I was able to finger my way into this forum.
Stop lying HP! You know your mousepad is faulty. Your HP experts know **bleep** well the number of returns for this part.
Workaround: Bang hard on the mousepad with a closed fist. If that does not work: buy a Dell.

I have read that one cause of this problem was inadequate static tape (intended to discharge static build up) on the touchpad inside the case. Where it should have a piece on either side, it only had 1 piece. So, after you close your lid for a while and come back you'll have this static charge causing your touchpad to click, right click, jump and dump all over. Which is also why hitting it or squeezing it sometimes corrects the issue because you actually cause it to discharge.. Though I do not recommend hitting your laptop.
