HP 246 Notebook
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Hi,

I am planning to upgrade my 6 year old laptop which has 2GB (Single Channel) ram clocked at 800MHz which has higher operating frequency. I just wanted to know whether I could club it with another 2GB (single/dual channel) with it which comes with operating freq of 1333MHz and work seamlessly.

Also whether single channel RAM could run with another RAM in free slot and whether I should purchase single/dual channel RAM for upgradation.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi:

Below is the link to the parts list for the product number you posted.

HP PartSurfer

It doesn't really give any detailed info, but if you are sure that you have the Elcot Kenya model, then it only has one memory slot and the max the slot can take is only 2 GB.

Does your notebook have one of the processors listed for that model...Intel Pentium 2020M, Intel Pentium A1018, or the Intel Celeron 1000M?

If so, then you are at the max according to the manual.

If you look at the processor specs for any of those processors, Intel indicates the max memory for each of them would be 32 GB.

Intel® Product Specification Comparison

If your notebook only has one memory slot, the memory is only going to run in single channel mode, but maybe you can experiment and buy a single 4 GB DDR3L-1600 memory chip.

I don't think that they are that expensive.

Hi:

If your notebook's memory is running at 800 MHz, then you need to add another DDR3L-1600 MHz memory module.

In order for the memory to run in dual channel mode, it has to be installed in matched pairs.

Since you are running a 32 bit operating system according to what you posted, the max memory that a 32 bit operating system can use would be a max of 4 GB.

So, add another 2 GB DDR3L-1600 memory module to the existing one.

Below is the link to the service manual.  Chapter 1 pages 11 & 12 have the memory upgrade info for the HP 246 models.

Thanks for your reply but I have the Elcot model which says it

"Supports up to 2048 GB of

system RAM (2048×1)"

So that means I cannot upgrade to 2GB*2GB config?

Also please advise if I should go for single/ dual channel RAM for upgrading as my laptop has single channel.

Thanks!

You're very welcome.

What is the product number of your notebook?

Use this guide to find that information...please do not post the serial number.
