DV6-7010
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

What is the maximum amount of memory I can install on a DV6-7010

It appears to have 8GB but Windows 10 says there is only 6GB.

Hi:

If this is your notebook, the maximum memory capacity is 2 x 8 GB of DDR3L-1600 memory.

HP Pavilion dv6-7010us Entertainment Notebook PC Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support

The specs indicate it has a 4 GB chip + a 2 GB chip = 6 GB.

See chapter 1 of the maintenance and service guide for the memory upgrade info:

The spec also says it is DIMM, but I looked and it is SODIMM !

You indicated that Windows is reporting your notebook has 6 GB of memory.

I explained to you WHY it is reporting 6 GB of memory,

That means it has a 4 GB memory chip and a 2 GB memory chip installed, just like the specs indicate.

The last time I checked, four plus two equals six.

The terms DIMM and SODIMM are used interchangeably.

DIMM vs SO-DIMM: Characteristics, Definition and Differences | ITIGIC

DIMM usually refers to a standard desktop size memory chip and SODIMM refers to a notebook size memory chip.

So, perhaps HP used the wrong memory term but that doesn't change the fact that the quantity of memory HP installed was 6 GB which matches what Windows is reporting.

In any event, you wanted to know how much memory your notebook could support, and I gave you the answer you were looking for, and the reference material for my answer.

Have a good evening.
