I currently have a core i5-2450 in my laptop and I am looking to upgrade to a i7-2670 that I got pretty cheap.  Are there any motherboard limitations?

Hi:

Yes, there are.

You will need to change the motherboard out to install the i7 2670QM, and the service manual does not list that the 2670QM is supported.

See chapter 1, page 2, for the list of supported Intel processors and see chapter 3, page 27 for the motherboard info.

Here is a side by side comparison of the processor you purchased and one of the supported ones listed in the manual.

It may or may not work is the best I can tell you unfortunately. (that is assuming you can find a replacement motherboard to install, which is going to be very hard to do).

Thanks for your help, but what is the reason for the motherboard change? The sockets appear to be the same.

I don't know, but apparently, a quad core processor won't work in a dual core motherboard.

As, I stated above...carefully look at the motherboard listing in chapter 3...They are specifically listed as dual core, or quad core, with different graphics solutions for each core type.

i have a dv7-6135dx had an i5-2410 and I upgraded to an i7-2670 and it is working fine....no issues. Manual shows i7 cpu's will work quad and all but do not show all that will work.
