HP Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Full disclosure - I LOVE my hp spectre x 360 - that is to say I LOVED my hp spectre.  It's a great design with solid power / specs in a small package. However, the motherboard died just over a year after purchase which is incredibly disappointing. I am told that because it is 2 months out of warranty that the cost of fixing it is $650, more than half of the cost of a new laptop. Unfortunately, based on a google search, it would appear that this is a fairly common occurance with this laptop. So while I'd say that the performance of this laptop prior to failure was very solid - please beware of what seems like a major and costly defect.

If anyone has suggestions on a more cost effective way to replace this - I would love to hear it. Otherwise, I would advise against purchasing this product as there seem to be decent odds you will be replacing it in little over a year.

Oconnoan,

Welcome to the club! I had two spectre x360 13-4005s die on me.

I am looking into the possibility of getting the motherboard repaired inexpensively.

You might find my experience interesting.

photo_phillie 13,

Yes, my issue is resolved. I had my motherboard repaired by a third party, not HP.

If you read my thread, linked to above, it will provide all the details of my experince from diagnosis through resolution.

Here is a summary of my repair:

The repair shop that I used was CPRS, located in Miami. I dealt with a guy called Gaston. He was very familiar with this motherbaord failure. In fact, he told me he had personally owned a spectre x360  that went bad. They repaired it and sent it out in two working days. I had it back in just over a week (shipped from PA).  The cost was 100 plus return shipping of $20. It cost me $20 to ship to them....so total cost $140.

My motherboard was repaired, not replaced.

If you want to confirm that your motherboard burned up in the common mode of failure reported so often, do this:

Remove the back cover of the laptop and look under the white sticker. You will see evidence of a scorched component and burn marks on the white sticker. Perhaps not necessary, since they all seem to die this way. I have a picture of this on my origonal post if interested.

I'd remind you that you will need to send in the whole computer, not just the motherboard. So, no need to dissassemble the computer.
