Method / Option - Read the user manual
For example, from the User Guide - Windows 10
Docking Support for HP ZBook 65/150/200 W Thunderbolt 3 Dock
HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock 849784-001 (Page 26 for more information)

Method / Option - Find Compatible HP Devices
Check to see which HP docks are compatible with the Zbook 15 G3.
Use that information to decide whether your Dock meets the specs.
- Find the compatible models of docs, read the Tech Notes on the dock(s) that are similar to the dock you have.
- Compare the Tech Specs information to the specs on the dock you want to use.
- If your dock meets the technical requirements, it is a likely match.
Look for Compatible Product(s) using the HP Virtual Agent - HPVA
Compatibility Check
Check the data for yourself using the HP Virtual Assistant
Consumer systems can open the agent at the product homepage.
Consumer Notebook Examples: Notebook, Pavilion, Spectre, Envy, and others
- Open the Support Home for your (consumer) Computer.
- Click / Open the Virtual Agent (lower right corner of the homepage screen / web page).
- Wait for the Virtual Agent to be ready to receive your question.
- Ask your question – For example, ask: “Which pen is compatible with my computer?”
- Follow the prompts, answer the questions.
- NOTE that in most cases, it is enough to search at the "series" level, or select a model similar to yours from the list within your model series.
- Note that a compatible product result does not guarantee the HP Store carries that product in stock.
- Thanks for using the HP Virtual Assistant.
Example Questions:
Which dock is compatible with my computer?
Is Thunderbolt dock compatible with my computer?
Which pen is compatible with my computer?
Notes:
- A compatible product result does not guarantee the HP Store carries that product.
- If you “Finish” the Virtual Assistant chat session, the assistant uses the data to improve the behavior.
- The HP Virtual Assistant is not yet true “AI”, but finishing the inquiry does help the software get better over time.

General Observation
If the non-HP docking station works, great.
If the non-HP docking station connects without harming the workstation but does not work, fine.
If the non-HP docking station connects, does not work, and / or destroys the workstation, it might be too late to backtrack.
Before you connect any new device, make sure your backups are current and that your most critical data is backed up somewhere other than the workstation.
