Hi
I have a new HP envy laptop (which has the USB-C thunderbolt connection) and we want t connect it to a Dell Docking station WD19S.
when I plug in the USB-C cable from the docking station, the laptop sems to connect and then drop the connection and repeat this cycle. (when I watch the "devices" screen in windows I see the monitors and a USB hub appear 'and disappear too)
I've done all the HP and WIN 11 updates, but the problem persists.
Should they work together OR is there a fundamental compatibility issue I won't be able to resolve please?
Many thanks in advance
Jonathan

Hi @olivarez580,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP Envy laptop repeatedly connects and disconnects when using a Dell WD19S USB-C/Thunderbolt docking station. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Confirm the dock connection type
Make sure you are using the Thunderbolt/USB-C cable that is permanently attached to the WD19S.
Avoid adapters or extension cables, as they can cause power and data instability.
Check laptop power requirements
Connect the HP Envy’s original HP charger directly to the laptop (not through the dock).
Some HP Envy models do not accept full charging from non-HP docks, which can cause connect/disconnect loops.
Update dock firmware
Download and install the Dell WD19S dock firmware update utility on the HP laptop.
Restart the laptop and dock after the firmware update completes.
Update Thunderbolt and USB drivers
Open Device Manager and expand System devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Ensure Thunderbolt, USB Root Hub, and USB-C drivers are updated and showing no warning icons.
Disable USB power management
In Device Manager, open each USB Root Hub and Generic USB Hub.
Under Power Management, uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
Check BIOS Thunderbolt settings
Enter BIOS on the HP Envy (usually by pressing F10 at startup).
Ensure Thunderbolt support and USB-C charging / docking options are enabled.
Test dock without peripherals
Disconnect all monitors and USB devices from the dock.
Connect only the dock to the laptop and check if the connection stays stable.
Understand compatibility limitations
The WD19S is optimized for Dell systems and may not fully support power delivery or device stability on HP laptops.
Basic functions may work, but repeated connect/disconnect behavior usually indicates partial compatibility.
I hope this helps.
