@DKnight51, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that your HP Pavilion is showing a SMART Test Error Code 303. I’ll guide you through what this means and how to recover your data.

What Does SMART Error Code 303 Mean?

The SMART Hard Disk Error 303 indicates that your hard drive has failed the Short DST (Drive Self Test). This typically means the hard drive is failing or has already failed and needs to be replaced.

Unfortunately, this also means the system won’t boot into Windows until the drive is repaired or replaced.

How to Recover Your Data

If you need to recover your files before replacing the hard drive, here are a few options:

Option 1: Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool (if accessible)

If your PC still partially boots or you have access to another HP PC, you can create a recovery USB:

Note: This won't recover personal files, but can help reinstall Windows on a new drive.

Option 2: Remove the Hard Drive and Use a USB Adapter

  1. Power off your laptop and remove the hard drive (refer to your model’s service manual).
  2. Connect the hard drive to another working PC using a SATA-to-USB adapter or external enclosure.
  3. If the drive is still readable, you can copy your files to another computer or external storage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
