Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook, where you can find the memory removal and replacement procedure.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06146792
If you don't want to add 2 x 8 GB of memory, it is better to have 2 x 4 GB than 1 x 8 GB.
Plus it will be cheaper to just buy another 4 GB chip and add it to the existing one.
But if you plan on later adding an 8 GB chip and removing the 4 GB chip, then get an 8 GB chip now. It won't hurt.
With one memory chip and an empty memory slot, the memory runs in the lower performing single channel mode. With memory installed in mismatched, capacities such as a 16 GB chip plus an 8 GB chip, the memory runs in single channel mode.
But with two memory chips of matching capacities (2 x 8 GB, 2 x 16 GB), the memory runs in the higher performing dual channel mode.
