X360 13"
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

Im completely Stuck, as an IT person this has totally func'd me.

Windows 10 was complaining there was not enough drive space to upgrade to latest greatest(uff) big update.

So, I decided Ok, lets upgrade to a NVME M.2 Samsung 970 EVO PLUS. 500GB.  then i used Macrium Reflect to clone the disk.

And , i thought ! ok - this should be dead easy, and the machine should just recognise the new drive, and existing Windows installation and away you go.......NO

it kept rebooting into AUTOMATIC REPAIR...... Diagnosing PC ........... ERROR  ....... your system cannot start...blah blah blah blue (fancy blue screen).

tried all the different types of options to try to get into windows on safe mode, disable this disable that. BUT NOT the dreaded clean windows options .....because that means im going to loose all my installed apps etc..... which I DONT WANT TO HAPPEN..

tried this Macrium like 3 times, same result.

So i thought, ok  i pay £35 to get Acronis Disk Clone - as its supposedly does the resizing automatically for me.  Paid, downloaded, and did the same thing.

Of course i did all this on my MAIN Desktop PC, which has 3 MVME drive slots.

ACRONIS - ARRGGGG same thing! .... boots into the Automatic Repair state, then goes into Diagnosing PC ..... and basically ends up at the same CANT RESTART WINDOWS blue screen issue.  Only Options RESTART or Advanced Options.....

so, now im thinking, WHY?  is this something HP Hardware related, because i heard Cloning a windows machine should be a DODDLE, DEAD EASY.

Any help on this would be MASSIVELY APPRECIATED guys....... im completely at a loose end........:-(

No BitLocker Running, No NOD32 ESET. Standard Windows 10 Pro.

I've only used MR to do cloning and have never had it fail on me the numerous times I have done this.

But when I did it, BOTH of these were true:

1) Target drive was at least as large (capacity) as the source drive -- so I did not have to do any shrinking or removal from the source drive

2) I used the MR function to tell me what partitions were needed -- as you ALWAYS need more than the OS partition to make the new disk bootable.

I have had issues where the cloning worked but the new drive would not boot.  When that happened, I booted from the USB repair stick I made using MR and used the option to repair the boot records.  Takes a couple of minutes and after that, the new drive ALWAYS booted without issue.

So, if you have done all of these, I am mystified as to why MR did not work for you.  IF you use a PAID version, they do have a support forum that provides excellent support.

Hi,

Thanks HP! you saved the DAY!

i did the Macrium USB Recovery way, repaired the Boot sector.  booted up, at first it didnt like it, then i simply rebooted, as it complained about boot drive nto accessible, i went into "start with boot options" went into Safe Mode, it has a password on it, which i forgot - had to redo the new password - managed to get into Safe mode, then simply rebooted.

and now ALL IS GOOD.

Thanks LOADS HP, much appreciated....

now its stuck in this wierd "your device is missing important security and quality fixes" issue, which hopefully i can fix my own.

thanks
