HP ENVY - 17t-bw000 CTO

The small indicator light next to the connection from my AC adapter to my laptop is flashing from white to yellow. Every time it changes I hear a brief audio sound (i.e., da-da-da). The laptop battery is fully depleted and I am running exclusively on AC power.  My laptop randomly crashes and I have to reboot multiple times throughout the day. Is My AC Adapter defective?

Thanks

Hi @Johneeeeeeeeeee,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

The issue you’re describing with your HP ENVY - 17t-bw000 CTO, where the indicator light is flashing between white and yellow and accompanied by a sound, suggests a potential problem with the power supply to your laptop. Here are some possibilities and steps to troubleshoot:

1. Check the AC Adapter and Power Cable:

  • Inspect for Damage: Check the entire length of the AC adapter and power cable for any visible damage, such as fraying, cuts, or bent connectors.
  • Test with a Different Outlet: Plug the AC adapter into a different power outlet to rule out any issues with the power source.
  • Try a Different Adapter: If possible, test your laptop with a compatible HP AC adapter to see if the problem persists. If the issue stops, your original AC adapter might be defective.

2. Battery and Power Reset:

  • Remove the Battery (if removable): Disconnect the battery and the AC adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power. Reconnect the battery and AC adapter and try powering on the laptop.
  • Check Battery Status: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Battery Status to see if the battery is recognized and charging correctly.

3. Check the Power Connection:

  • Secure Connection: Ensure the AC adapter is firmly connected to both the laptop and the power source.
  • Inspect the DC Jack: Check the DC input jack on the laptop (where the adapter plugs in) for any signs of looseness or damage.

4. AC Adapter and Battery Diagnostics:

  • Run HP Support Assistant: Use the HP Support Assistant tool to run diagnostics on the battery and AC adapter. This can help determine if either component is failing.
  • BIOS Diagnostics: Restart the laptop and press F2 or Esc during startup to enter the BIOS diagnostics. Run a battery and AC adapter test from the diagnostics menu.

Hi @Johneeeeeeeeeee ,

Please find the remaining steps.

5. Potential Issues with the Adapter:

  • Defective Adapter: If the adapter is faulty, it may not be supplying consistent power, causing the laptop to crash and the indicator light to change colors.
  • Faulty Charging Circuit: If the adapter and battery tests do not reveal issues, there could be a problem with the laptop's charging circuit.

6. Replace the Adapter if Necessary:

  • If testing with another adapter solves the problem, you will need to replace your AC adapter. Ensure you get an original HP adapter that matches your laptop’s specifications for voltage and amperage.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the problem might lie within the laptop itself, such as a motherboard or power management hardware issue. In this case, contacting HP phone support is advisable.

Keep me posted for further assistance
