The integrated memory card reader on my laptop does not recognize the MultiMediaCard -16 by Cannon when I insert it into the SD slot of the laptop. What are my options for getting the photos off this MMC card and onto my laptop?

Hi @weavme,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand how frustrating it must be to have your memory card go unrecognized, especially when you’re eager to access your photos. Let’s go through a few options to help you get those images onto your HP Laptop 17-ca3xxx.
1. Check for Driver Updates
- Go to Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting it.
- Look under Disk drives or Memory technology devices for any entries related to the SD or memory card reader.
- Right-click on the card reader device and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. This may install any missing drivers.
2. Use an External Card Reader
- If your laptop’s built-in reader doesn’t recognize the MMC, an external USB card reader that supports MMC cards may work. Many external readers are multi-format and often handle MMC as well as standard SD cards.
- Connect the external reader to a USB port, insert the card, and check if your laptop can read it that way.
3. Try Using a Different Device
- If you have access to a camera, printer, or another computer with a card reader that can read MMC cards, try inserting the card there. If it’s recognized, you can transfer the photos to a USB drive and then connect the drive to your laptop.
4. Use a Photo Recovery Program
- If your card is slightly damaged or has format issues, a photo recovery tool may still be able to access the files. Programs like Recuva or PhotoRec are often effective at reading cards that may not show up in Windows File Explorer.
- Install the software, run it with the MMC card inserted, and see if it can detect the photos for recovery.
5. Check File System Compatibility
- Some older MMC cards use file systems that modern Windows systems may not readily recognize.
- Go to Disk Management (type "Disk Management" in the Windows search bar) to see if the MMC appears there. If it’s visible, right-click it and try assigning it a drive letter. Avoid formatting it unless you’ve recovered the data first.
Hopefully, one of these methods helps you access your photos!

Thank you so very much for that very thorough response to my question. I selected your option #2 which was to use an External Card Reader. I was able to purchase one from Amazon that supports MMC, SD and Smart Cards for a very reasonable price. The card reader arrived today and I was able to successfully open and retrieve all the photos on both the MMC card and the Smart Card. I was a little confused at first by the Smart Card because it wouldn't read when inserted face up so I tried inserting it face down and it opened right away. Again thanks for you recommendations and advice!
